Our daily lives are becoming more and more hectic. We try to balance too many tasks at the same time, such as our work problems, paying the bills, and seeking to give more attention to our relationships, as well as ourselves, this can undoubtedly be very stressful!

Anxiety and stress are typical reactions from our body to warn that something is not working as it should, but when we can not manage these reactions productively, some disorders may end up harming our daily lives, especially our health.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in the United States, anxiety-related disorders affect 18% of the population, or about 40 million adults aged 18 years and older. In response to that, various remedies have been developed by the pharmaceutical industry, like serotonin inhibitors and tranquilizers for the treatment of anxiety-related disorders. While these drugs are effective for most patients, some people do not feel any improvement or cannot withstand the side effects.

How Can Cannabis Help?

Throughout the years, CBD has been shown to have several anxiolytic properties, treating various disorders such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social phobia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder, and mild to moderate depression.

Also, CBD is considered the 5-HT 1A antagonist, a serotonin receptor subtype. Anxiety and depression are often treated with drugs targeting the serotonin system, so drug companies have developed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, known as SSRIs. They block the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, increasing the availability of serotonin in the synaptic space. This helps brain cells transmit more signals of serotonin, which can reduce anxiety and improve mood in some cases.

In other words, serotonin is a type of mood regulator found in our body, and although the CBD does not create this kind of substance, it makes it more accessible for the brain and body to use them efficiently and return to a state of equilibrium in a completely natural way. Thus, the power of CBD can be compared to SSRIs, boosting signals through the serotonin receptors.

Another study related to stress and anxiety shows that patients suffering from depression and anxiety disorders often show a smaller hippocampus, and the successful treatment of depression is associated with the birth of new neurons (neurogenesis) in the hippocampus, which is one of the major areas of the brain and plays a critical role in various brain functions such as the formation and cognition of our memory. Through testing it has been observed that CBD can help the hippocampus regenerate neurons, showing that both SSRIs and CBD can promote neurogenesis.

Conclusion

Over time more studies have been conducted showing patients have had a decrease in anxiety while using CBD. CBD is increasingly becoming an alternative to promote well-being and balance our body and mind. Today on the market we have an incredible variety of products both for therapeutic treatment and to help us stay in harmony with the hectic routines we face and within ourselves. Remember that for any treatment using cannabis products, it is necessary to seek advice from your doctor to determine what the ideal product and dosage is for your needs.
