June is considered the Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month, reminding us how important it is to constantly take care of our health and the health of those around us in relation to these disorders.

With the increase in life expectancy, many brain-related diseases end up affecting a large portion of the population. A research publication released in 2012 found that the origin of these diseases are linked with the excessive accumulation of iron in certain regions of the body.

According to this study, iron seems to disturb the dynamics of mitochondria, which are fundamental for the maintenance of an efficient circuitry of neurons in the brain, causing them to initiate more cellular deaths than normal. Iron can also lead to an overload of free radicals that increase brain inflammation and cause more damage.

In addition, a study published in May of this year has substantiated these claims but also brought us good news. This study confirmed that CBD can help protect the brain from such damage.

Scientists infused test guinea pigs with iron, mimicking the accumulation of iron thought to lead to neurodegenerative diseases. High levels of proteins associated with cell death were found, validating the idea that iron is actually related to the rapid death of cells. On the other hand, guinea pigs that received CBD reported normal levels of these degenerative proteins, protecting the brain from the effects of iron.

The results of the study suggests the use of CBD as a means of preventing diseases and brain damage from brain aging such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as cardiovascular events, brain damage and alcohol damage.

Conclusion

Even with the advancement of science and technology, the treatments and means of prevention against degenerative diseases are still very scarce. Based upon the emergence of scientific support, CBD is showing great promise in the potential treatment for such conditions. Many people who suffer from these disorders are now given comfort and hope through cannabis. There are many cannabidiol products available on the market, making it a simple and affordable option for those in need.
